Hyak-Ro

A (very) belated thank-you to everyone who came out for the Big Dumb Dick CD release party on Saturday May 3rd. We had a great time and it was awesome to share the stage with a band that has such a storied musical history here in Milwaukee.

We are currently in pre-production for (what is basically) our debut CD. Because we want to dedicate as much time as possible to writing/recording 2008 will probably hold very few, if any, Hyak-Ro shows. Don't worry, we'll come up with something special when get the CD done. If an opportunity to play that we just can't pass up arises, we'll let you know here and on our MySpace page.

New show added. We will be opening for Big Dumb Dick's CD release party on Saturday May 3rd at The Rave. Also appearing will be Deflection and The Last Vegas.

This is an all ages show, beer available with ID. Doors open at 7PM, $8 gets you in.

So where the hell have we been? Well, we told you we wouldn't be playing anywhere this winter...guess you didn't believe us. And with 98.9" of snow measured at the airport, we picked a good one to skip.

A couple of updates for you. We've been working on writing some new material as well as gearing up to record our next, as of yet untiled, CD. We also have no tentative release date as we don't want to rush this. Our last full length CD was so rushed that we have never been happy with the results.

We have only added one show to the summer season so far, the annual Dimebag Darrell Birthday Bash organized by Wisconsin's own Tribute to Dimebag Darrell. Details on this years celebration of Dimebag's life and music are still to come. There are other shows in the works, but we don't intended to hit too many as we want to work on our CD.

One thing you can bet on is there will be no battle of the bands this year, unless it is something special. After loosing out to a band that represents the very definition of radio friendly, college/indie rock and another group that could barely tune their guitars let alone sing in key, we're done with that scene. Loosing to a good band is one thing, but coming in second to that and then being told that we aren't snappy dressers, well that's just too much for one band to endure. Thank-you very much to everyone who came to the last Hyak-Ro show of 2007! Hyak-Ro will be taking a break from the stage to write new material, put together a new show, and to begin work on their first CD as a power-trio. Check back for updates!

We are sad to report that the Tribute to Dimebag Darrell show in December has been cancelled. To that end, next weekends show with Neverstatic and Mercury Crossing at The Riverwest Commons will be Hyak-Ro's last show for several months so that the guys can concentrate on writing/recording, freshening up the show, and generally avoiding carrying drums and amps in and out of bars in the Wisconsin winter. So pending an opportunity that just can't be passed up, come see this last show or risk having to wait it out for a while!

Hyak-Ro has begun the work of recording their next CD. No projected date as far as completion, we will work on the CD until we are happy with it, however long it takes.

The show that had been scheduled during Center Street Days at the Uptowner in Milwaukee has been canceled due to scheduling conflicts. Hyak-Ro still has shows scheduled in October, November, and December. Check the events page for information.

Thank-you to everyone who came out on Saturday, Dad the Plow was unable to perform do to personal reasons but we do recommend checking them out at a later show as they do, in fact, kick ass. Schlock, however, did perform and put on a hell of a show. We look forward to possible future collaborations with them. Hyak-Ro will be performing at The Main Stage again on October 13th. Welcome to the new Hyak-Ro web site. Overdue for a refresh, and lagging behind on news. The guys have been taking a bit of a break from performing after the shows in June. Work on Hyak-Ro's next CD has also begun, with an optimistic goal of having it done by late this year/early next year. Several shows have been added in August. Hyak-Ro will be playing at Heart Breakers and The Main Stage, as well as the Dimebag Darrell Blacktooth Birthday Bash. Please check the events page for all pertinent information.

Another week, another loss at the hands of pop/indie/college rock. Kid, You'll Move Mountains came away with the win at the Shperd-Express Band Slam. Hyak-Ro's next show is this Friday, June 15th at The Miramar Theater for the MOMBOB Grand Finale. See the Events page for more details.

For those of you who haven't already heard, we lost Saturday's MOMBOB Rock and Roll Finals to Deflection by a coin toss after we tied them with 47 votes. There's still a possibility of a Wild Card birth in at the Grand Finale on the 15th, but for now Hyak-Ro has their sites set on the Sheperd-Express Band Slam. Free, all ages show. Hyak-Ro is honored to announce that we will be participating in two shows to honor the late Dimebag Darrell. The first is August 18th, Dimebag's Blacktooth Birthday Bash. Yes Dime's birthday is actually the 20th, but you can't party like a rock-star all day on a Monday. This show will be in St. Lawrence, WI (just North-East of Hartford off of US-41) and will be an all day event with a pig roast, poker run, live bands, and charity raffle. The second show is a A Tribute To Dimebag Darrell on the third anniversary of Dime's tragic death, December 8th and will be held in Jackson, WI (just South of West Bend off of US-45). There will be live bands and a charity raffle. Both shows are non-profit events with all proceeds going to a charity of the event organizer's choice to be named later. There will be tons of prizes and maybe even a few surprises. So come on out and lets make this year's event the biggest celebration of Dime's life and legacy in the Midwest! After almost six years as a band, Hyak-Ro finally has T-Shirts available. Shirts are $10 each and are actually moving quite well right now. If you'd like a shirt, shoot one of the guys an email (see Contact page) and they'll get you hooked up.

Back in April, Hyak-Ro signed up for the Milwaukee Original Music Battle of the Bands, or MOMBOB, in the Rock and Roll category. May 3rd's Round 1 saw Hyak-Ro going head to head with Madison's Off Killter. When all was said and done Hyak-Ro landed a decisive victory to move on to the final round. Thank-you to everyone who came out, listened, and voted! We couldn't do it without you, and we'll need your support again on Friday June 1st, for the MOMBOB Rock and Roll Finals. Show starts at 10 P.M. and it's $7 to get in...sorry no advanced tickets this time. And in case you are curious, the set list for the 3rd was Waste, Hindsight, Divided, One Desire, and Self Center (a.k.a. #5).

Having had bad luck with budget recording to this point, the guys in Hyak-Ro have been assembling their own studio. The plan is to take all of the time needed to get the recording done right without budget concerns or deadlines. With almost all of the equipment in place and the room coming together, recording should begin soon. In the mean time Hyak-Ro hopes to continue to play shows throughout the summer. A little delinquent in updating the news here, thank-you in advance for your patience. First off, a huge thank-you to Dad the Plow for inviting us to come and play what has been our most fun show to date with them and Subatomic . It was an awesome night musically, with Dad the Plow and Subatomic both turning out phenomenal performances. And as if that wasn’t good enough, Hyak-Ro bought pitchers of beer for all of their loyal followers. Just a token of our appreciation to those of you who make it to shows on a regular basis.

Hyak-Ro is currently on break while the guys write new material. Understanding that they aren’t a national act and that locals will eventually get bored with coming to see the same stuff week after week, the guys decided it’s more important to keep the shows fresh then to keep pounding out the same stuff every weekend. Shows should start happening again sometime in April, check back for updates. Thank-you to everyone who has supported us so far!

In other news, the Hyak-Forum has been shut down. No one was really using it other then spammers pushing porn and Viagra. If a more secure code can be located it might resurface, but in the immortal words of the Magic 8-Ball "Outlook not so good".

We will be playing again next Saturday, the 27th, with Dad the Plow and Subatomic at The Main Stage in Waukesha. Show starts at 10 P.M., 21+, $5 to see three bands. Also, if you’ve been to a Hyak-Ro show in the last month, that little green button may be worth something…but you’ll have to come down to see what!

This just in: Due to the cancellation of another band, Hyak-Ro will be playing Heart Breakers again this Saturday, January 20th with the show starting sometime around 9 P.M. Taking the stage with Hyak-Ro will be President Fluid and Year of the Gun. This promises to be an awesome night of rock! 21+, $10 at the door.

After three weeks of recording, Hyak-Ro's most recent studio experience wrapped up last weekend with two tracks recorded; Divided and Ass End Groove Shit. Zack and Jim are currently completing the mixing and mastering and will hopefully be done soon.

In other news, Hyak-Ro will be playing their first Milwaukee show later this month with ...13 Pills, Marazene, and two other bands yet to be named. Specifics on the show haven't been set yet, check back for updates.

Hyak-Ro's time in the studio will begin next weekend. Tracks to appear on the upcoming recording will include two new tracks, Divided and Symphony Alone, as well as the tried and true Ass End Groove Shit.

Hyak-Ro will be entering the studio later this month to record a three track demo. Once the recording/mastering is complete the songs will be available for streaming on MySpace.

Mazel tov! It's a boy! It's big, it's blue, and it has balls. It's Wes's new drummset. Wes and Zack finished assembling the new kit today, made of Keller maple shells, rims and lugs from Drum Supply House, and supported by Pearl hardware.

The members of Hyak-Ro continue to practice and write, having completed two new tunes at this point, they are now hammering on a third.

The Hyak-Forum is now online. A general discussion thread is all that's been added thus far, as things pick up, more topics will be added.

Hyak-Ro has been writting new material and will begin recording a demo in the next couple of months for Big Vin Records.

So a late February website release was a bit optimistic. At any rate, welcome to the new www.Hyak-Ro.com. A couple of new features have been, or will be, added. Please excuse the mess while the site is revised over the next couple of months.

1) A new web forum has been added. The layout of the forum will be changed in the next few months, and there probably won't be much to discuss at first, but it is there for your use.

2) Hyak-Ro music will be streamable from this site in the near future.

As far as the band goes, Stump is on hold while Jim, the studio engineer, moves into a new facility. So the band is moving forward with writting material for thier next CD, and hope to be gigging again by late fall/early winter.

Several updates today:

Frustrated with the lack of bassists in the area and driven by the desire to get back on stage Ken has taken up bass.

The follow up to Here's Your Spoon has been officially titled Stump. This will be a mostly acoustic album featuring an "acoustic" version of Begot and a more embellished version of Eliason as well as several new songs.

And finally, a new site is underway. With any luck this new site will be up and running before the end of Febuary.

After months of trying bassits, and even a drummer, the guys in Hyak-Ro have called it quits...as far as looking for a fourth member. For now the guys are in the studio working on a follow-up to Here's Your Spoon tentatively titled Fed Gopher. Stay frosty for updates and downloads from this upcoming work.

We at Hyak-Ro assume that it is safe to say that sometime in early June, Kevin quit. We assume this simply because he picked up his gear saying the he wanted to practice at home and never called back.
